Duvall Farmers Market Chatter
The Official e-Newsletter of the Duvall Farmers Market
Week of June 12th

Wow!  Opening Day was a HUGE success this past Thursday, June 5.  Neither cold, nor rain, nor gusts of wind could keep the Duvall Farmers Market from celebrating the start of its 3rd Annual Opening Day Celebration.

Even before the market opened, many of our devoted Localvores were chomping-at-the-bit and pacing the market perimeter, like rabbits waiting for Farmer McGregor to open the garden gate on his Carrot patch.

As the hand reached 3:00 pm, the Duvall Farmers Market Cow Bell began to ring and the season officially began.  Visitors with their market bags, wagons, strollers, and carts strolled up and down Stella and 1st street, welcoming back our farm and artisan vendors who returned this season.  Shoppers also extended a hand of welcome to those vendors who were new to the Duvall Farmers Market vendor family.  What an exciting night for all!  The Duvall Farmers Market counters recorded 678 visitors and the market experienced an amazing 300% increase in sales!  Wow!

What does this mean?  This means that those who are shopping at the Duvall Farmers Market on Thursdays from 3 - 7 pm are showing us that you truly desire to put a face with the foods you eat.

Farmers Markets across this State are seeing record sales and Duvall can now officially be added to the list of successful Farmers Markets now open in 2008!

If you were not able to visit the Duvall Farmers Market this past week, don't forget that the market will be open every Thursday from 3 - 7 pm.  Located on 1st and Stella Street in front of the Duvall Community Center (formally known as the WRECK Center) the market will end its season on October 2 with our Annual Harvest Festival.  Just follow the Duvall Farmers Market banners, signs and bright colored flags on Thursdays!   Each week the market will offer an abundance of produce, farm related items, baked goods, eggs, and much more!

Are you a Localvore yet?  Anyone who shops, eats and supports your local Farmers Market is just that, a Localvore!  The next time someone asks you if you are a vegan, vegetarian, or carnivore, just simply say, ''Nope, I'm a Localvore!'' and see what they say!

Being a Localvore means that you are doing as much as you can by shopping at the Duvall Farmers Market and in turn you are helping to support our local economy.  One business in Duvall who has supported the Duvall Farmers Market is The Grange Cafe, owned and operated by Rod and Judy Neldam.

The Grange Cafe has set the example of what it means to be a Localvore!  Kudos to the Grange Cafe for holding the top Localvore honor this week!  The Grange Cafe features healthy, locally sourced, and often organic ingredients at prices at or below what other local-organic restaurants are charging and put them all together and you have a culinary masterpiece.

Check out their menu, make reservations today and eat this week at the Grange Cafe in Duvall.  For more information, visit them at www.grangecafe.com or by phone at (425) 788-2095.  Support our local economy by dining in Duvall this week!

Kid's Activity Booth

A whopping 57 children signed up this past week to participate in the Kids' Planting Competition which ends on the last day of the market on October 2.  This doesn't take into count those children who just opted to plant.

Each week, the market sees close to if not over 100 children per week.  This past Thursday, our annual planting a sunflower or pumpkin seed was quite the event and children had the opportunity to water their seeds without even taking the garden hose to them due to the rain!

We welcome photos from those children who have registered by sending them to the Duvall Farmers Market by email to DuvallFarmersMarket@msn.com or drop them off at the Information Booth.

This week's free activity is sponsored by Momma Manga, Jae Holt, owner.  Miss Jae will be making Father Days Cards with the kids this week.  Children may make a card to give to Dad or to give to someone who is like a Dad to them.  Glitter and glue and paper, too!

We are still seeking Sponsors for this season to help out at the market.  If you or your organization would like to come to the market and provide a craft or activity, your sponsorship in this area will give you the ability to hang your banner/sign and you are able to have available your brochures or business cards.

Musicians Corner

The Duvall Farmers Market is honored to have this week some very special guests.  The Cherry Valley Elementary School Choir, Solo band members and Trios will be performing from 4:15 - 5:00 pm. Directed by Jonna Farley at Cherry Valley Elementary School.

Jonna loves to teach and is in her 5th year of teaching at the school.  She teaches General Music twice a week to all classes at the school and she also teaches 5th grade band 4 mornings a week before school and Intermediate Choir (3rd, 4th, 5th Grade), one morning per week and during lunch recess.

The Duvall Farmers Market truly is honored to have such a dedicated teacher and her students perform for those in our community!

Those who enter weekly are then added to the final drawing of the year on October 2, during the Duvall Farmers Market Harvest Festival. The more you visit the market this summer, the more chance of winning!

Recipe Corner

Did you know?

Peas are one of the world's oldest crops? Wild peas were foraged centuries before they were domesticated as the trellis champions we know today. For centuries, peas enjoyed a popularity that rivaled today's sliced bread.

During the Roman Empire the Romans thought peas to be poisonous and believed that they needed to be dried before they could be consumed.

Peas don't demand much. Just give them halfway decent soil and vine support. Peas can grow anywhere you like.  Containers, walls, trellises, trained up corn and sunflower stalks, and even in hanging baskets.   There are numerous varieties of peas these days so try growing some yourself!

Here are a few great ways to enjoy Sugar Snap peas (you get to eat the pod, too!)

Sugar Snap Peas

  • Sugar Snap Peas, washed and dried, tops removed (try this with other veggies from the market!)

  • Fresh Garlic - sliced thin

  • Olive Oil

  • Pinch of Kosher Salt

Directions:  Heat skillet and place a few drops of Olive Oil in the pan.  Add garlic and peas and saute until warmed.  A great addition to any meal and good for you!

Dilly Snap Peas

For those who enjoy canning ...

2 pounds of raw snap peas
Remove strings, if necessary, and pack snap peas as tightly as you can in hot, sterilized pint jars, leaving 1/2-inch of headroom.

To each jar add:
A pinch of cayenne pepper or dried chili peppers
1 clove garlic, diced
1 head fresh dill or similar amount in leaves

Bring to a boil:
2-1/2 cups water
2-1/2 cups white vinegar
1/4 cup salt

Pour the mixture over the snap peas, leaving 1/4-inch headroom. Seal the jars and process for 15 minutes in a boiling water bath. For a sweet and sour pickled pea, preserve snap peas in a "bread and butter" pickle recipe, tossing a few onion slices in each jar. Add pickled peas to salads, soups and stews (add a few minutes before serving), diced in quiches and rice dishes, potato salads (marinate the warm, diced potatoes in the pickling brine for a few hours).
