Are you a Localvore?

This year, we encourage everyone to be a Localvore. You can be a Localvore by supporting the Duvall Farmers Market this season by shopping and eating that which is grown, raised and harvested right here in Washington. You can help sustain the Duvall Farmers Market and our community simply by doing your shopping in Duvall. Remember this: For every dollar spent at the Duvall Farmers Market, that dollar circulates 8 times before it leaves Duvall! Shop at the Duvall Farmers Market and be a Localvore!

We open the market this Thursday at 3:00 pm with the Traditional ringing of the Cow Bell. Children will enjoy planting gigantic pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Those children who are more serious gardeners will have an opportunity to return on October 2 with their harvested crop. Enter your child this Thursday only! Rules and Directions will be available at the Children's Activity Booth.

Please help us welcome our returning vendors and make sure you come by and give a friendly hello to our new Farmers and Artisans who are joining us. We have a plethora of produce this season so make sure you make it down to shop for your weekly produce.

Don't forget to stop by the Information Booth and fill out your Weekly Drawing form. Those entering nightly have the chance of winning the market drawing at 7:00 pm each week. Names collected each week will be entered to win one of three grand prizes on October 2 during the 3rd Annual Harvest Party!

The Amazing Tasting Station

This year, the Duvall Farmers Market welcomes the introduction to the Slow Food Movement in the Snoqualmie Valley. Elizabeth Walker, Duvall Council Member and owner of Sound Tree Solutions, Inc. will be on hand to answer questions periodically throughout the season. She will provide information regarding the new Slow Food Convivium in our valley. What is Slow Food? It is simply this. If it is grown with care, prepared with passion, and served with love, then it is Slow Food.

New this year to the Duvall Farmers Market is our Tasting Station! Each week the market will offer copies of our featured recipes and we will either demonstrate how to make the recipe or we will have on hand for tasting various items found within the market to purchase for the recipes we feature. The Tasting Station will also welcome Professional Chefs each month as they share their culinary skills with us.

Please help us welcome Executive Chef Eric Wright on June 26. Chef Wright graduated from the Culinary Arts at Seattle Central Community College and has worked in many Seattle area restaurants for over 20 years. Recently he was the Executive Chef at Cactus Restaurants and he is now the Executive Chef and founding member of the Snoqualmie Valley Slow Food Convivium. Executive Chef Wright also works with the Grange Café in Historic Duvall as a Consultant/Chef.

Recipe Corner

Did you know ...

...Mustard is a member of the Brassica family of plants? This plant bears tiny round edible seeds and tasty leaves. The English name is mustard and is derived from the Latin form mustum ardens, meaning burning wine. A reference to the spicy heat of the crushed mustard seeds and the French practice of mixing ground seeds with must, the young unfermented juice of wine grapes.

Mustard was considered more medicinal rather than culinary. In the 6th century, the Greek scientist Pythagoras used mustard as a remedy for scorpion stings. One hundred year later, Hippocrates used mustard in a variety of medicines and poultices. It was the Romans who began grinding mustard seeds and mixing them with wine to make a paste not much different then what we know today. In 1866, Jeremiah Colman, founder of the Colman's Mustard in England was appointed as mustard-maker to Queen Victoria. He perfected the technique of grinding mustard seeds into a fine powder without creating the heat which brings out the oil. The oil must not be exposed or the flavor will evaporate with the oil.

Honey Mustard Dressing
Recipe provided by Gladys Collins

1/2 cup Dijon Mustard (Grey Poupon Country is a favorite)
1/2 cup White Vinegar (Wine Vinegar or Basil Lemon Vinegar is a nice alternative)
1/2 cup Lemon Juice
1/2 cup Honey (purchase your honey from Honey Bee Hives and meet the bees who made it!)
1 1/2 cup Olive or Vegetable Oil
1 Garlic Clove (peeled)

Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor (a Stick Blender works great, too!), and blend until smooth (emulsified). You may add additional honey to sweeten to your liking. Pour into a quart size mason jar and place in the fridge.

Spinach Salad

Baby Spinach
Sliced Mushrooms
Bacon or Turkey Bacon bits
Purple or Green Onions (sliced thin)
Hard Boiled Egg, sliced

Directions: Warm a portion of the Honey Mustard Dressing and drizzle over salad ingredients. Truly a delightful salad for the summer months!
