This past
week we were entertained by FEAST, a group of 9 very
talented local musicians, playing and singing to the market
masses while market goers sampled wonderful vegetable
creations by Culinary Expert, Chef Eric Wright. The Sunchoke
was our featured 'Fresh Guest' and it was great to see so
many trying the different ways a Sunchoke could be prepared.
From raw to cooked, the Sunchoke is delicious! Try it with
Full Circle Farm's Braising Mix and some garlic, stir fry
and add your favorite herbs! Yum!
The long

Please help
us warmly welcome this coming Thursday, GOLDEN GLEN
CREAMERY to our Vendor Family!

Glen Creamery
is a small
family farm that has been producing only the highest quality
milk for over 40 years,
Vic and Judy Jensen have
been dairy farming since 1967. Located along the Samish
River in Bow, Washington, their son Doug is also part owner
of the dairy.
In 2004 Judy and Doug’s wife, Brandy, decided
to begin a cheese business, known today as Golden Glen
Creamery.
The dairy milks about 65 cows and the ladies
buy milk directly from the dairy to make their delicious
farmstead dairy products.
Here are some of their products that they
will be selling: Flavored Cheddar Cheeses like Chives &
Onions, Dill & Garlic, Cloves, Caraway & Cardamom, Red

Certified Organic anyone?
Another great farm
is Full Circle Farm. Certified Organic and family
owned, Full Circle is located right here in our
fertile Snoqualmie Valley in Carnation. They grow over 75
varieties of Certified Organic fruits and vegetables.
Beginning with only 3 acres the farm now operates on 260
acres and they provide their organically grown produce to 50
restaurants and 14 grocery stores.
Full Circle Farm also can
be found in other Farmers Markets in our area and they also
sell their produce thru their CSA program to various
families and individuals. Full Circle Farm is owned by
Andrew Stout and Wendy Munroe and we are honored to have
them join us each week in Duvall.
For more information
about Full Circle Farm and their CSA program, visit them at
the Duvall Farmers Market every Thursday or go to their
website at:
www.fullcirclefarm.com and join their CSA today!
What is a CSA, you ask?
CSA simply means Community Supported
Agriculture. Those farms, who offer a CSA program, have an
order system where the consumer is able to order in advance
a box of produce, fruits, eggs, etc., and have it either
delivered or pick up directly from the farm. The Duvall
Farmers Market is encouraging you to shop directly either by
supporting your local farmers market or order today from a
CSA farm. You can find a CSA Farm at the Duvall Farmers
Market or by visiting other Farmers Markets where you live.
Featured Fruits!
Local Strawberries arrived last week at the
Duvall Farmers Market and this week we welcome the Rainier
Cherry, both sweet, juicy and worth the wait! This has been
a slow season for our fruits this year, but thanks to our
few weeks of sunshine, our Market Baskets are filling up
with incredibly delicious seasonal items.
This week, while putting your shopping lists
together for your 4th of July meals, why not
challenge yourself to purchase as many of your fresh foods
from your local Farmers Market! Here are other Vendors who
are selling this week!
Please Remember
When
visiting the Duvall Farmers Market you will want to remember
that most vendors do not have Debit or Credit capabilities.
Some may, but it is not guaranteed. All vendors will accept
cash or checks. Those who do accept Debit/Credit at the
Duvall Farmers Market is Chocolate Serenade and Simply
Charmed Jewelry.
Those with Companion Pets
As
the temperature sores throughout the season, please remember
that the asphalt will get incredibly hot. We encourage you
to leave your companion pets home on days like this as the
asphalt will burn the pads of their feet.
The Duvall
Farmers Market cares about the well being of each of our
market visitors and our vendor family. We ask that if you
so desire to bring your dog to the market, you must keep
them on a short lead and keep a watchful eye on them at all
times. Please also remember that not all Farmers Markets
allow dogs.
We also wish
to remind you to be mindful of small children and those who
may be fearful of dogs. With so many people concentrated
in one area the Duvall Farmers Market would hate to have an
incident of biting or damage done to vendor displays.

Strawberry Shortcut Cake

Ingredients
Cake:
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Strawberries and Cream:
2 pints strawberries
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Directions
For the
cake: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter an 8-inch
round cake pan, line it with parchment paper, butter the
paper, and dust the pan lightly with flour.
Whisk
the flour with the granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt
in a medium bowl. Lightly whisk in the butter, egg, milk,
and vanilla, just until smooth. Pour the batter into the
prepared cake pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the
center comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Cool on a rack for
10 minutes, then turn it out of the pan, flip upright, and
cool completely on the rack.
For the
strawberries and cream: Set aside 1 pint of the best-looking
whole berries for topping the cake. Hull and thinly slice
the rest of the berries and toss with the granulated sugar.
Set aside. Whip the cream with the confectioners' sugar and
vanilla to soft peaks. Refrigerate until ready to use.
To
assemble the cake: Cut the cake in half horizontally with a
serrated knife. Place the bottom layer cut side up on a cake
stand or serving plate. Drizzle the juices from the sliced
berries over the cut sides of both halves. Fold a couple
tablespoons of the whipped cream into the sliced berries and
spread over the bottom layer. Top with the other piece of
cake, cut side down. Spread the remaining whipped cream on
the top of the cake and top the cake with the whole berries.
Know-How: Cutting a cake into layers is easy as
saw-spin-separate: Begin to saw the cake in half
horizontally. Just before you reach the middle of the cake,
give it a quarter turn. Continue to saw almost to the
center, then give it another quarter turn and saw again
until you reach your original point of entry. Saw completely
through the cake's center and separate the layers.
Strawberry Lemonade
Ingredients
2 cups
water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
2 cups cold sparkling water or club soda
Ice
Mint sprigs, garnish
Whole strawberries, garnish
Directions
In
a medium saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the
sugar dissolves. Add the lemon peel and lemon juice, stir,
and remove from the heat. Let cool completely, then strain
into a clean pitcher.
In a
blender, puree the pint of strawberries and add to the
pitcher with the lemon juice. Stir well to combine and
refrigerate until well chilled.
Add the
sparkling water and stir well. Pour over glasses filled with
ice and serve, garnished with mint and strawberries.
Happy Independence Day Week!
The
Duvall Farmers Market wishes you and your family a very
relaxing, happy and safe 4th of July! As we each celebrate
this holiday may we remember our men and women serving
overseas and in this nation and remember that most people in
the United States who celebrate the 4th of July tend to
forget why this holiday is so important to our country.
The
Colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776 that Great
Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules
and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began
making plans to be able to make their own rules. They no
longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to
do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were
becoming an independent country.
Congress
met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a
committee to write a formal document that would tell Great
Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves.
The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft of the
document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until
he had written a document that he thought said everything
important that the committee had discussed.
On June
28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson's "fair" copy.
They revised the document and declared their independence on
July 2, 1776. They officially adopted it on July 4, 1776.
That is why we call it "Independence Day." Congress ordered
that all members must sign the Declaration of Independence
and they all began signing the "official" copy on August 2,
1776. In January of the next year, Congress sent signed
copies to all of the states.
The
Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of
paper sitting in a museum someplace. It is the very symbol
of our country's independence and commitment to certain
ideas. The men who signed the Declaration of Independence
wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document
that spelled out exactly what was important to our leaders
and citizens. They wanted us to be able to look at the
Declaration of Independence and immediately think of the
goals we should always be working for, and about the people
who have fought so hard to make these ideas possible. The
people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for
treason by the leaders in Great Britain. They had to be very
brave to sign something that would be considered a crime! So
every time we look at the Declaration of Independence, we
should think about all of the effort and ideas that went
into the document, and about the courage it took for these
people to stand up for what they knew was right – Our
Freedom, Our independence!
Did you
know? Laurie Gilbertson, owner of Trinity Lavender Farm is a
distant grand daughter of Sir Oliver Wolcott, one of the
signers of the Declaration of Independence?

signed it, you will want to visit this incredible website at
